What to wear
Dress as you would for a job interview: clean, plain and conservative. Avoid hats, sunglasses, shorts and clothing with slogans or images. Leave pocket knives, scissors and anything else that won’t pass a metal detector at home.
What to bring
- Photo identification
- Your citation, notice to appear or other court papers
- Proof of anything the court asked for, such as completed classes or community service
- Eric’s numbers: office (916) 465-6500, call or text 24 hours (916) 802-5979
On the day
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Security lines and parking take time.
- Silence your phone and don’t discuss your case in the hallways.
- Check in with the courtroom clerk or bailiff if you are unsure where to go.
- If you are running late or can’t come, call Eric immediately.
Do you need to be there?
In many misdemeanor cases, your lawyer can appear for you (Penal Code § 977). In felony cases you generally must be present. Missing court without permission can lead to a bench warrant (Penal Code § 978.5), loss of bail and a separate charge for failing to appear (Penal Code § 1320). Ask Eric before you decide not to go.
